Infinity War is here! After 10 years and 18 movies the common denominator for the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise, the war we were waiting for, is finally here. In Infinity War, Thanos finally emerges from the shadows. He takes matters into his own hands (quite literally) after repeated failed attempts in previous movies. Marvel Studios finally (after Killmonger in Black Panther) has a villain who is menacing, no nonsense and can induce fear even in the Incredible Hulk. In Infinity War Hulk doesn’t smash, Thanos does and boy he obliterates.
Infinity War begins with Thanos (Josh Brolin) and the Black order in pursuit of the Infinity Stones. Black order consists of Cull Obsidian (Terry Notary), Proxima Midnight (Carrie Coon), Ebony Maw (Tom Vaughan-Lawlor) and Corvus Glaive (Michael James Shaw) : the adopted children of Thanos. The stones, 6 of them if collected and placed on the gauntlet will give Thanos the power to destroy “half” the universe. The rest of the movie forms a treasure hunt and in the quest they lay countless bodies. Will the Avengers be able to stop them and how many die form the rest of the movie.
Infinity War is the mother of all MCU movies- there is a lot happening. It might be overwhelming for some people as a lot of things are stuffed in one movie. Infinity war has introduced a lot of new characters like Eitri (Peter Dinklage) and brought back previously forgotten ones too like Red Skull (this time played by Ross Marquand). Infinity War is one big space travel and introduces lots of new planets. Many unlikely partnerships are created by the script which were not seen in the previous MCU movies. Although surprising, those moments are hilarious and absolutely seamless. There is tragedy (lots of it so be prepared) which makes it Un-Marvel (superheroes aren’t supposed to die) but the comic scenes due to the unlikely match ups provide some relief (though one might argue some of the jokes seem out of place and dilute the gravity of the moment).
Infinity War is a no nonsense movie. It doesn’t waste time in getting a move on and something or the other is happening all the time. Since it has been like a looming shadow in all the other MCU movies it has all the elements from the previous Marvel movies. By elements I mean not just the characters but the essence too. VFX is too good like it has been in all the MCU movies but what stands out is the script and the direction. The Russo Brothers have done a tremendous job is bringing all the superheroes (in-spite of their super egos) together to fight Thanos.
All the previous MCU movies have projected Thanos as the ultimate villain. And I believe all the build up was worth it. Thanos is a type of villain who will split opinion. His goal is noble but his methods aren’t. He is a titan who has seen his home destroyed due to overpopulation and he doesn’t want the universe to reach the same fate (How Cute?). His commitment to the cause is absolute (as seen during the sacrifice he makes to retrieve Soul Stone). The movie is entirely about Thanos and there is a brief intro into his background. The background establishes the character. He is very powerful and packs a punch even without the gauntlet (his fight with Hulk establishes that). Beneath the all conquering tough titan there is a soft and considerate father who loves Gomora (Zoe Saldana).
Josh Brolin has done a tremendous job in bringing out the emotional side of the ultimate villain Thanos. Josh himself has accepted that he enjoyed playing Thanos given the amount work gone into creating the character. In addition to providing the voice, Josh also performed motion capture for Thanos. The other person I liked was Zoe Saldana as Gomora, the loving but estranged daughter of Thanos. Their relationship provides an emotional heft to the otherwise action packed movie. Some superheroes like Vision and Wanda have meatier roles as compared to other heavyweights like Captain America or Black Panther. But Iron Man and God of Thunder hog much of the screen time.
We have been waiting for Infinity War for long and do I need to say its a must watch? And whatever people might say I loved Thanos, he is alone and longs for love. He is a peace loving guy who loves sunshine and I say cut him some slack! There are some hints which point out that there is hope after all the deaths. But I can’t discuss the same here as this would give spoilers. Please share your ratings above and tell us how you felt watching the Infinity War.
