Bioscopewala is an adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore’s famous short story Kabuliwala. But, there is a change in the characterization from the original story where Rehmat Khan (Danny Denzongpa) is a Bioscopewala who goes around town showing films to children. In the original story of Kabuliwala, Rehmat was a dry fruit seller. Also, the timeline has changed. While the original was based in 19th century but Bioscopewala is based around 1980’s during Taliban Regime.
Rehmat Khan befriends a little girl named Minnie (Geetanjali Thapa). He sees his own daughter in Minnie who is of same age as Minnie. Then suddenly he disappears one day and is accused of murder. After several years, Minnie is now living in France as a documentary film maker. One day she gets the news that her father Robi Basu(Adil hussain) passed away in a plane crash while travelling to Afghanistan. Minnie then tries to figure out why her father was on that plane to Afghanistan and in the process meets the Bioscopewala. The same guy who was the inspiration behind her choice of career.
Directed by Deb Medhekar, the movie rolls back the years. Its so nice to see Danny Dezongpa in the titular role. Growing up Rehmat Khan was a few characters I wished was real. The movie is releasing tomorrow in India across the theaters.
