Deadpool 2 is a parody which has assassinated every iconic character and movie possible. It is bigger, better, funnier and more ambitious than the previous installment. It has elevated the scope by adding many young mutants who can carry the franchise for 10-15 years! Deadpool was a love story but this movie has added the F word: Family.

It begins two years after the first movie and starts with a tragedy. A depressed Deadpool/Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) attempts suicide which, of course, is unsuccessful. Its a bold beginning for a character known for his dry sense of humor. The movie’s wry comedy successfully offsets his grief. The tragedy propels Deadpool to seek out his raison d’être- some sense of purpose, some sense of belonging (as he just cant die!). So he joins X Men as trainee under the mentor-ship of Colossus (Stefan Kapicic). But, Deadpool has his own set of rules and Colossus banishes him from the group. In his first mission, saving Russell’s (Julian Dennison) life leads top his arrest. Russell, also called as Firefist is a mutant from an orphanage who yearns for revenge from the headmaster who has tortured him for years.

Cable (Josh Brolin) is a cybernetic mutant soldier who comes from the future to kill Russell. Russell has anger management issues and if not stopped before making his first kill, will in future kill Cable’s family. Meeting Russell changes Wade’s life and he vows to protect Russell from Cable. From then on action filled journey begins where Deadpool slays lot of people on and off the screen.

David Leitch has directed Deadpool 2, who has added some style and has wonderfully set up the franchise for the future. The way this family is assembled in the movie is simply outstanding. Writers Rhett Rees, Paul Wernick and Ryan Reynolds have designed a hysterical sequence. Deadpool is a happy go lucky character and the movie is made in his image. It introduces a tragedy and the audience is led to believe that it will be a serious movie all about revenge. But instead the movie matures the character so that people will accept Deadpool as the leader of X-Force in subsequent movies.

It has succeeded where Justice League failed, expanding the scope of the franchise. The characters introduced are not disjointed but carry the essence of Deadpool. In fact I want a stand alone movie for a character called Domino (Zazie Beetz). Domino commands a screen presence of her own and her action scenes take the movie to a different level altogether. Also there is the fact that the post credits have been used to complete the movie with important details being covered- true Deadpool style.

But the brilliance of the movie is also its big flaw. It’s not for muggles. It is one big American pop culture jamboree. It has references galore, from Harry Potter to Batman to Robocop to Cool Runnings to Say Anything! The opening credits pay homage to James Bond in the true, irreverent, Deadpool style. And along the way Deadpool makes fun of the Avengers (I think almost all of them), the Terminator, Star Wars, John Wick, The Time Traveller’s Wife, even the series Stranger Things and Beyonce! If, you haven’t watched at least some of them then Deadpool 2 is not for you, you will be sitting in the theater wondering why the everyone is just loosing it. And as for the references, my favorite one is when Wade imitates Sharon Stone’s famous scene from Basic Instinct. For me that was the most ambitious crossover event ever attempted.

As for the performances, Ryan Reynolds is as usual a stand out. He brings his own persona to the character fondly called as “Merc with a mouth”. Josh Brolin makes you forget that he was Thanos just 20 days back (even though Wade does make it a point to remind you). With a metal arm and a vision for the future this Winter Soldier 2.0 dazzles. Even though he wants to kill Russell, you sympathize with his cause. Julian Dennison has done a good job as the tortured mutant kid with anger management issues. I fully agree with his point that he could have been in previous superhero movies if Marvel didn’t discriminate by going for ripped bods. Karan Soni returns as Dopinder and has a meatier and important role.

Deadpool 2 is a one of the rare sequels which are are better than original. Its a very important movie in the franchise which opens up a plethora of story-lines to explore. Watch it and share your rating above.
