A coming of age drama disguised as a horror thriller, IT is based on the 1986 novel of the same name by the King of horror, Stephen King. IT is about conquering your fears and facing the world.

In October, 1988 Georgie (Jackson Robert), a 7 year old kid disappears in the town of Derry, Maine. The disappearance is not one- of- a- kind : apparently there have been other disappearances and the authorities haven’t been able to crack the case. That summer, Bill Denbrough (Georgie’s brother) is haunted by his brother’s disappearance and persuades his friends to look for Georgie. Their quest gradually adds members to their circle and they name themselves “The Losers Club”. The Losers Club is a band of misfits- each of whom have a fear and is terrorized by the same entity. They name the entity “IT” and determine that IT (Bill Skarsgard) assumes the appearance of what they fear.

IT is a superhuman entity which has existed in the town for years, terrorizing children. The entity is a Boggart which feeds on fears of the children and assumes the shapes of their fears. After feeding it goes on a hibernation for 27 years and returns back to wreak chaos. Brilliantly acted by Bill Skarsgard, this is at par with the Joker by Heath Ledger. His screen time is very limited but his performance makes the character very fascinating. And its all done subtly- the voice, the make up or the drool hanging from his mouth.

But the movie is about the Losers Club where everyone is special in their own way. It focuses on the children and because of them the movie becomes a coming of age drama which makes you care for the kids and their fears.

The Losers Club comprises of:

Bill Denbrough (Jaeden Lieberher):

He is the leader of the club and is haunted by Georgie’s disappearance. He feels guilty for not being with Georgie on that fateful day and is thus fueled by it to uncover the mystery.

Beverly Marsh (Sophia Lillis):

She is the only female member of the Losers Club but is in fact a tomboy. She is bullied at school because of the rumors of her being licentious. Her father sexually abuses her and thus she cuts her hair to look like boys. Her fear is her father and the anticipation of the worst and that is what IT uses.

Ben Hanscom (Jeremy Ray Taylor):

Ben is the new kid on the block and gets bullied because of that and also for being overweight. Since he doesn’t have any friends he spends most of the time in library with a keenness for history. He is the one who links the disappearance and identifies the pattern. He becomes part of the Losers club when Bill and Richie save him from Henry Bowers and his gang. Ben along with Bill have a secret crush on Beverly. Ben is afraid of mummies.

Richie Tozier (Finn Wolfhard):

Richie is the loud, foul mouthed and bespectacled friend of Bill. The Stranger Things actor is afraid of clowns.  He is the kind of person who needs attention- he is the clown of the group and makes sleazy  jokes all the time.

Stan Uris (Wyatt Oleff):

He is the son of a Rabbi and is studying for his bar mitzvah. He isn’t interested in religion and is afraid of a weird, creepy painting in his dad’s office.

Mike Hanlon (Chosen Jacobs):

He is an African American who is an outsider to the town of Derry. A fire mishap had taken away his parents and from then on is raised by his grandparent. He is reluctant to take up the family trade as a butcher and has constant hallucinations of the fire incident. IT uses this fear of the incident against Mike.

Eddie Kaspbrak (Jack Dylan Grazer):

Eddie is a hypochondriac who lives on placebos in a constant fear of falling ill. His mother is the main reason behind his condition and he is okay only with his friends. He fears that he will become a leper and that is enough fodder for IT!

Again, it is not a kids movie and is not a horror movie. In fact its a movie for all ages. The movie connects with everyone because of the universal theme of conquering your fears. There is also the theme of teamwork where The Losers’ Club together defeat IT. But it does have its horror elements when things catch you unawares. The scenes involving the kids are cute specially those involving Beverly and the shy and awkward boys. IT follows the book and sets it up brilliantly for the sequel. With the star cast announced just recently, I am waiting for the next installment. Watch IT and share your rating above.
